Ahmed Abodehman is a Saudi Arabian poet who, in an attempt to preserve his oral rural culture through writing, decided to write his first novel in French. A year after the publication, Abodehman translated his own work into Arabic. This study examines Abodehman’s strategies when addressing the French and the Arabic audience, and how they impacted the self-translation of the novel in Arabic. The two translations will be analyzed from both a translation studies and literary perspectives. Oustinoff’s and Fitch’s pioneering works on self-translation along with Vinay and Darbelnet’s classical typology will be used to characterize Abodehman’s self-translation project. On the literary side, Genette’s narratology as well as critical concepts such as “surconscience linguistique” and “oraliture” will be used to provide an in-depth analysis of Abodehman’s novel. This analysis will help us better understand Abodehman’s relationship to French and Arabic languages and cultures as well as identify the changes between the two versions in terms of narrative structure.
