Description

Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Fiscal Year 2019 Budget Estimates (Justification Book)

The DARPA Defense Research Sciences program elements (PE) seeks to provide the technical foundation for long-term national security enhancement through the discovery of new phenomena and the exploration of the potential of such phenomena for defense applications. It supports scientificstudy and experimentation that serves as the basis for more advanced knowledge andunderstanding in information, electronic, mathematical, computer, biological, and materialssciences.

Basic Operational Medical Research Science (DARPA). This PE supports basic research in medical-related information and technology leading tofundamental discoveries, tools, and applications critical to solving defense-related challenges. Efforts focus on identified medical gaps in warfighter carerelated to health monitoring and preventing the spread of infectious disease. Theprogram uses information, computational modeling, and physical sciences todiscover properties of biological systems that cross multiple scales of biologicalarchitecture and function, from the molecular and genetic level through cellular, tissue, organ, and whole organism levels. To enable in-theater, continuousanalysis and treatment of warfighters, this project seeks to explore diagnostic andtherapeutic approaches, including the use of bacterial predators as therapeuticsagainst infections caused by antibiotic-resistant pathogens; developingtechniques to enable rapid transient immunity for emerging pathogens; andidentifying fundamental biological mechanisms that enable certain species tosurvive in harsh environments.
