이 논문은 사회적 사실과 관련한 메시지를 전달하는 것을 중요한 임무로 갖고 있는 사회 사진의 여러 양태를 공간과 장소라는 개념을 통해 구분하면서 새롭게 등장한 사회 사진의 특성을 비장소 개념을 통해 이해하고 설명하고자 하는 목적을 가진다. 초기의 사회 사진은 집단적 일반성이 드러나는 공간을 재현하는 ‘정치적 공간의 사진’이라 할 수 있다. 20세기 후반부에는 ‘장소의 사진’이 등장하였다. 이것은 특수한 공동체 안에서 살아가는 개인들의 삶과 경험을 인류라는 보편적 공동체의 시각에서 바라보면서 나와 동등한 타인의 삶을 이해할 수 있도록 하는 사회 사진이다. 최근의 사회 사진은 사회적인 것에 대한 작가의 개인적이고 주관적인 감정을 재현한다. 이 사진들은 사회적 사건이나 사회관계로부터 촉발된 개인적 감정을 사회적인 것과 직접적으로 연결되어 있지 않은 대상을 통해 드러낸다는 점에서 ‘비장소의 사진’이라고 할 수 있다. 여기에서 비장소는 사건의 불발을 의미한다. 비장소의 사진과의 만남은 관객이 가진 과거 기억의 총체를 소환함으로써 과거, 현재, 미래가 응축된 지속적 현재로서의 기억을 만들어내는 계기로 작동할 수 있다.

The purpose of this article is to distinguish different forms of social photography through the concept of space and place, and to understand a new form of social photography, based on the concept of ‘non-lieu(non-place)’. Social photography in the early 20th century is a ‘photography of political space’ which represents a section of space revealing collective generality. In the second half of the 20th century, ‘photography of place’ appeared. This is a photography which represents individuals living in a community. It shows a person’s daily experiences and offers an opportunity to empathize with the lives of others on par with me. Recent social photographs represent the author's personal and subjective feelings on social issues. These photos can be understood as ‘photography of non-lieu’. They reveal personal feelings triggered by social events or social relationships through objects that are not directly related to social matters. The word ‘non-lieu’ means the non-occurrence of an event. The ‘non-lieu’ is a place where nothing happens. The encounter with the photography of non-lieu can be an occasion to create memories perceived as a continuous present in which the past, present and future are condensed. The unidentifiable and incomprehensible signifiers that appear in the photography of non-lieu prevent the audience from simply reproducing their collective memories of past events.
