Abstract

Introduction: Asthma is described as a hyper-reactive disorder of airways characterized by airway inflammation and bronchial secretions due to hyper-responsiveness of airway cells. The prevalence of asthma has shown consistently an upward trend through the last few decades, especially in children, and accounts for more school absences and more hospitalizations than any other chronic illness. Materials and Methods: Review from diverse Ayurvedic literatures, pediatric books, research journals, magazines and authentic internet sources. Discussion: Review suggests that Purana Shali (Peddy), Guduchi, Rasona, Vastuka, Shigru, Draksha, Yava, Godhuma, Mudga, Aja Kshira, Madhu, Bilwa, Purana Sarpiare to be consideredas Pathya Ahara and Masha, Sarshapa, Tila, Dadhi, Guru Vihstambhi Ahara as Apathya. Ayurveda gives due importance to food in the management of disease both as a causative factor (Apathya) and as a part of therapy (Pathya). By looking at available pharmacological action of above mentioned Pathya Ahara, they all were found to be having anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic and anti-asthmatic properties; while Masha, Tila, Sarshapa like Ahara cause IgE mediated reaction putting them in the category of Apathya. Conclusion: Pathya is the one which keeps the person fit, maintains normal body function which leads to proper functioning of the organs, nourish the mind and intelligence, prevents diseases and at the same time corrects the irregularities that may occur in the body. Thus, everyone should abstain from Apathya (unwholesome to body) and follow Pathya (wholesome to body) as prevention is better than cure.
