한국 근현대사를 분석함에 있어서 경산코발트광산의 사례를 언급하는 것은 매우 유의미한 부분이 있다. 왜냐하면 경산코발트광산의 역사는 일제강점기 역사와 해방 후 근대 국민국가 수립에서의 갈등이 특화되어 있어서, 한국의 주요한 사회문화 과정을 상징적으로 보여주고 있기 때문이다. 코발트광산은 일제강점기 기간 동안 일본의 ‘조선반도’ 수탈과 강제 징용의 역사를 투영하고 있으며, 또한 이 광산은 1950년 많은 민간인들이 대한민국 군경에 의해 학살된 장소로서, 한국 현대사의 과거사청산기에 유해 발굴 등이 이루어지면서 주목을 받은 곳이었다. 이 논문에서는 한국현대사 시기별로 각각 변해온 경산코발트광산에 대한 담론을 역사적으로 재구성하고, 이러한 담론들이 발생하게 된 시대적 상황을 설명하고자 한다. 또한 이러한 담론 역사의 분석 결과를 통해, 현재 경산코발트광산의 사례가 보여주고 있는 ‘한국 과거사 청산의 올바른 방향성’은 어떠해야 하는가에 대해서도 의견을 피력하고자 한다.

The Gyeongsan cobalt mine is a meaningful case to examine in analyzing the modern history of South Korea as its history symbolically represents the country’s major social and cultural changes, including the country’s history under Japanese colonial rule and the conflicts surrounding the establishment of a modern nation-state after liberation. In particular, the Gyeongsan cobalt mine is an embodiment of the exploitation and forced labor that occurred on the Joseon Peninsula during the Japanese colonial period. The mine was also the site of a massive civilian massacre by the Korean military and police in 1950, which received significant attention when the bodies of the victims were exhumed as a part of the efforts to purge the past. This study historically reconstructs the changes in the discourses surrounding the Gyeongsan cobalt mine in the course of South Korea’s modern history to explain the historical background from which such discourses were born. Through this analysis, this paper presents what the case of the Gyeongsan cobalt mine suggests as the proper direction for clearing up South Korea’s past.
