This paper analyzes the negotiations held in the late 18th century between the shogunate and Shōrenin temple over the temple’s loan business. The business was launched by the initiative of Shōrenin, which then turned to the authority of the shogunate to secure the repayment of loan. This strategy, however, was not fully advantageous to the temple, as its business came under the control of the shogunate. It dictated the lower interest rate and the longer loan period, and requested total reports about the loan, which reduced eventually the profitability of loan business.
The loan business also affected the relationship between the temple and the shogunate. As the shogunate sought to regulate the temple’s loan business, Shōrenin resisted, attempting constantly to get out of the shogunate control. As the interests of the shogunate and Shōrenin differed, an overt conflict between them over the temple’s loan business was ready to emerge.
