In the early Koryo dynasty, its political regime was not an empire. Nevertheless, in the eyes of today’s people, the early Koryo period has been regarded as an imperial regime. This point of view was derived from the modern knowledge and perception about binary opposition between emperor institution↔lord institution. This view stems from the process of modern appropriation of imperial institutions and their retrospective application to the early Koryo period.
In the early Koryo period, Koreans were not aware of the emperor’s institutions, and some contemporary institutions were not even conceived as an imperial institution. However modern people applied their knowledge retrospectively to find numerous emperor institutions in the early Koryo period. It was assumed that the emperor institutions were chosen in binary opposition of emperor institution↔lord institution, and that it was deliberately and consistently selected from an independent standpoint. This means that the idea of the early Koryo imperial regime was born through the prism of the modern perception about emperor institutions.
