Zusammenfassung
Politische Akteur*innen sind lebhafte Produzent*innen von medialen Produkten und stellen sie dabei oft als Alternative zu etablierten traditionellen Medien dar. Seit geraumer Zeit stehen dabei nicht mehr linke Projekte, sondern „alternative Nachrichten“ von rechts außen im Zentrum der Debatte. Dieser Artikel analysiert mit PI News eine der populärsten dieser Plattformen in Deutschland. Untersucht wird die Entwicklung ihrer Popularität und ihre Klassifizierung als rechts außen auf Basis des ideologischen Schwerpunkts und der Vernetzung mit weiteren Rechtsaußen-Akteur*innen. Ebenso prüft diese Studie inwiefern oftmals vernachlässigte Entwicklungen der zeitgenössischen Rechtsaußen-Politik eine Rolle in der Berichterstattung spielen: die Identifikation mit einer europäischen Identität, die Bezugnahme auf gesellschaftspolitisch liberale Werte und der Aufstieg des Umwelt-Themas. Dabei wird die Bedeutung alternativer Medien für den zeitgenössischen „Rechtspopulismus“ kritisch reflektiert.
Abstract
Political actors are vibrant producers of “citizen media”, often portrayed as an alternative to established media. Recently, public attention has shifted from left-wing projects to far-right “alternative news”. This article analyzes one of the most popular of such platforms in Germany, PI News. The study focuses on the development of the platform’s popularity and its classification as far-right based on its ideological focus and its links to other political players. Furthermore, the article investigates the extent to which often neglected developments of contemporary far-right politics matter for the coverage of the platform: the identification with a European identity, references to culturally liberal values, and the rise of the environmental issue. In doing so, the role of alternative media for the contemporary “populist radical right” is critically reflected.
