In 2003, the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) published their first guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer [7]. In the 2nd edition, a clear recommendation was made on the use platin-based adjuvant therapy, and the role of positron emission tomography (PET) in staging and video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) was still evolving [8]. The first European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) guidelines, published in 2010, recommended PET in staging for surgery with curative intent [9].
