Secondaries of eclipsing binaries. I. Detection of the secondary of Delta Librae.
Abstract
The secondary Ca II infrared triplet lines of the Algol-type eclipsing binary Delta Lib have been detected both during and outside of primary eclipse. Well-defined velocity curves for the primary and secondary are obtained. A primary/secondary mass ratio of 2.9 + or - 0.1 and primary and secondary masses of 4.9 + or - 0.2 and 1.7 + or - 0.2 solar masses are derived. With a main-sequence primary and an evolved, less massive secondary that fills its Roche lobe, Delta Lib is an example of an Algol system that has undergone an episode of large-scale mass transfer. The evidence for a third member of the system is discussed and found to be unconvincing.
