When Less Is Better: A Comparison of Bach® Flower Remedies and Homeopathy
2010, Annals of EpidemiologyCitation Excerpt :Although the placebo effect appeared to operate in both groups, Rescue® Remedy significantly outperformed the placebo in reducing stress in the subsample characterized from test scores as experiencing a “high” level of anxiety (20). The results of this and similar studies are summarized in Table 1(16, 19, 26–28, 32–34). The term “homeopathy” is a combination of two Greek words: homoios (meaning “similar”) and pathos (“suffering”).
Motivational concordance: An important mechanism in self-help therapeutic rituals involving inert (placebo) substances
2008, Journal of Psychosomatic ResearchCitation Excerpt :Like other complementary medicines, flower essences are a spiritually contextualized therapy [32], and the spiritual nature of flower essences was part of the rationale presented by their inventor, Edward Bach [33]. From a biochemical perspective, all 38 essences are identical (brandy 60% and water 40%), and no difference has been detected between verum and placebo [34,35]. Flower essences can be considered a self-help placebo, which is used regularly for clinical purposes.
Dispositional predictors of placebo responding: A motivational interpretation of flower essence and gratitude therapy
2007, Journal of Psychosomatic ResearchCitation Excerpt :The above two studies did not investigate expectancy directly. Flower essence therapy is related to homeopathy and the only two double-blind placebo-controlled trials of this therapy have failed to find a difference between placebo and verum [26,27]. In an open study [28], 116 university students and staff were offered free flower essences in return for completed questionnaires and evaluation.
