Characterisation of organic acids trapped in coals

Abstract

THE characterisation of trapped organic compounds which occur in geological materials such as coal and oil shale can provide an insight into both the origin of the organic matter and its subsequent modification through chemical reactions. Much work has been done on the isolation and identification of polar and nonpolar compounds in carbonaceous materials1–7; however, aromatic acids in coals have received very little attention. Here we detail the characterisation and distribution of aromatic acids extracted from lignite and bituminous coals.
