The High-Energy Proton Beam as a Neurosurgical Tool

Abstract

IRRADIATION with high-energy heavy particles is suitable for the destruction of small selected regions in the central nervous system. Tobias et al.1 irradiated the hypophysis of animals and man with 190-MeV. deuterons and 340-MeV. protons. Anderson et al.2 made lesions in the hypothalamus of the rat using 190-MeV. deuterons. Malis et al.3, making use of the thin ionization peak at the end of the beam, produced lesions at a depth of 0.8 mm. in the cerebral cortex of the cat with 10-MeV. protons. The continuation of animal experiments and the possible application of heavy-particle beams to stereotaxic radiosurgery in man4 5 make it essential to know their effects on the central nervous system in detail.
