A novel ion exchange strategy to generate active intermediate species, Ni-S, by exploiting the photocorrosion phenomenon that occurs during photocatalytic reactions. Ni-S acts as a new electron capture trap, which significantly enhances the efficiency of photocatalytic hydrogen production. We prepared a unique ZnIn2S4/Ni(dmgH)2 composite photocatalyst, which demonstrated an optimized hydrogen evolution rate of up to 36.3 mmol/g/h under light irradiation and an apparent quantum efficiency of 20.45% at an incident monochromatic light of 420 nm.
