Hypotheses to explain the human condition include overall reduction in hair density (Schultz, 1931; Newman, 1970; Schwartz and Rosenblum, 1981; Wheeler, 1984; Folk and Semken, 1991; Sandel, 2013), miniaturization of body hair (Montagna, 1963, 1985; Montagna et al., 1992), or both (Schwartz and Rosenblum, 1981; Sandel, 2013). To our knowledge, the only previously published study of comparative hair density in humans and other primates evaluated only hairs larger than 2 mm in length (Schultz, 1931).
