Both the hippocampus and PFC are important in learning and memory and have been implicated in the pathophysiology of ASD [33–36]. While the hippocampus stores an explicit representation of space that is used as a “cognitive map” to guide goal-based behavior [37–41], the CA1-PFC pathway is crucial for goal-directed decision-making and providing abstract representations of goals and intentions [42–45].
