Ralph von Koenigswald (1902–1982), a paleontologist of Danish extraction raised and trained in Germany, received his doctorate degree in 1927 from the University of Munich (Weidenreich, 1945a–b; von Koenigswald, 1949, 1955, 1956; van Bemmelen, 1968; Franzen, 1974, 1983; Tobias, 1976, 1984; Bernet Kempers, 1982). Hired by the Dutch government on October 30, 1930, under a five-year contract (ARSIP/von Koenigswald, 1931), von Koenigswald began his Indies' service in January 1931 as one of three paleontological specialists who supported Survey field operations (Mijnwezen, 1933).
