      To clarify the inhibition effect observed at higher pH, the pH variation during reaction was primarily monitored. As shown in Fig. S6a, the abrupt changes of pH occurred at 1 mins signify that most of H4B2O82- existed as H3O3BOOH- rather than H2O2BOOH (pKa of perboric acid is approximate 7.8 to 8.2), which was ineffective for the PMS activation (Fig. S6b) [24]. Besides, the improvement of H2O2 generation further verifies the hypothesis, as H3O3BOOH- tends to hydrolyze into B(OH)4- and H2O2 through Eq 10 (Fig. S6c).
