Abstract

It is currently believed that cellular division breaks out at proper values of the bacterial mass. However, such an hypothesis is definitively refuted by experimental results. In the present paper, the nature of the cellular event that starts cellular division is discussed. The materials to be chemically worked out in the cell are growing exponentially with the age of the cell, while the number of molecules of the enzyme which catalyzes each chemical reaction grows only linearly with time. What follows is that eventually the former outgrows the latter always. Our proposal is that, as surplus materials grow up, an enzymatic threshold is overcome and the process of cellular division starts. This hypothesis agrees very well with all the experimental results, and interprets cellular division as a corrective event, in the framework of the general regulation system of the cell.

Rlassunto
