Abstract
Using the behavioral outburst known as a “temper tantrum,” the author examines the dynamics and handling of the out-of-control child from a viewpoint of ego development and personal practice experience. The acting-out incident is described in an observable pattern of behavioral characteristics and internal ego dynamics. Too, behavioral management techniques are suggested. The dynamic of personal fear on the part of the adult intervening in such situations is recognized and a plea is made for inservice experiences that allow practice in crisis intervention.
