Rappaport was born in New York City in 1926; he received his B.A. from Cornell University in 1949. After a career in business, he returned to school in 1959 and earned his Ph.D. in anthropology in 1966. He participated in an archeological field expedition in the Society Islands in 1960; the field work in New Guinea, on which the next selection is based, was conducted in 1962-1963. Dr. Rappaport is Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Michigan.
