ABSTRACT

We are dealing with learning that widens the ways in which certain kinds of situation are seen. ‘A way of seeing’ can be characterized in terms of the pattern of critical aspects of the situation that are discerned and focused on simultaneously. In every particular situation we make use of things we have learned earlier and in principle we can learn something in every situation, therefore every situation is potentially both a learning situation and a situation of application. While neither learning nor application can exist independently, it is convenient to talk about learning situations in the context of studying and to talk about situations of application when it comes to making use later of what one has learned through studying.
