ABSTRACT

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia in the elderly, accounting for about one-half of all cases in this age group. The prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease increases with age: in those under 65 years approximately 1 percent will be affected, whereas in those aged 65 years some 5-10 percent will have the disease, and in those 85 years or older the prevalence rises to 20-40 percent. Women are slightly more likely to be affected than men.
