Abstract

A simple Langmuir trough that can be fitted to a commercially available inverted fluorescence microscope has been designed and constructed. The trough allows in situ observation of a monolayer on water over a wide area. The space above the water surface is left open for manipulation of the monolayer. Examples of the utility of the apparatus are given.
