Abstract

The way in which the real area of contact between surfaces varies with load depends for elastic deformation on the surface microtopography. A previously obtained theoretical relation between these factors is tested experimentally by using simple large scale gelatine model surfaces. In this way it should be possible to give a clearer meaning to the interpretation of friction-load curves when these are used to give information about surface microtopography.
