Abstract
A possible explanation for the unusually high occurrence of pleural cancer (mesothelioma) in New Caledonia is the high presence of naturally occurring asbestos (NOA). Through the lens of the issue of NOA, this contribution analyses how the Kanak of Gohapin articulate the scientific geological concepts of rocks and indigenous concepts. The latter do not only classify rocks but also give them a meaning which, in some cases, can be an embodiment of other elements or concepts that go beyond the mere physical appearance. The combination of a linguistic and a cognitive approach was chosen in order to understand the local system of rock classification, the perception of illness related to NOA and possible links between NOA and past migration movements.
