On treatment with trifluoroacetic anhydride, 1-methylsulfinyl-5-hepten-2-one undergoes cyclization via its Pummerer reaction product to give 3-ethenyl-2-(methylthio)cyclopentanone. This scope of the reaction for synthesis of cyclohexanone and cycloheptanone derivatives was explored.
