Diels–Alder reactions of both 3,4-dimethoxy- and 3,4-dibenzyloxy-furan with various activated dienophiles have been investigated and results applied to the highly expeditious, regio- and stereocontrolled synthesis of (±)-methyl triacetylshikimate.
