Benzocyclo-octenes. Part 5. Thermal rearrangements of benzocyclo-octenes to benzo[a]cyclopropa[c,d]pentalenes

Abstract

Substituted benzocyclo-octenes may undergo thermal rearrangement to 2a,2b,6b,6c-tetrahydro-benzo[a]cyclopropa[c,d]pentalenes. The ease of this reaction depends on the substituents, and is facilitated by the presence of phenyl groups in the 6- and 9-positions of the benzocyclo-octene. The mechanisms of this and secondary rearrangements are discussed.
