Photochemical synthesis. Part LVIII. A photochemical synthesis of (±)-cuparene

Abstract

Alkyl aryl thioketones have been recently reported to give cyclopentanethiols on irradiation. With mercury(II) acetate these are converted into the corresponding olefinic hydrocarbons. Based on these reactions a simple synthesis of (±)-cuparene (1,2,2-trimethyl-1-p-tolylcyclopentane) is described.
