Electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance studies of the electropolymerization, electroactivity and complexing properties of poly(1,8-diaminonaphthalene) films

Abstract

The electrodeposition and properties of poly(1,8-diaminonaphthalene) films on Au electrodes have been studied using electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance and crystal impedance measurements. Redox switching of films exposed to aqueous 0.1 mol dm–3 HClO4 is accompanied by non-monotonic mass changes: proton, counter-ion and solvent transfers occur to extents dependent upon the experimental timescale. The films are also able to extract Hg2+ ions from solution, via complexation with amine groups on the polymer. Coulometric and gravimetric data are consistent with a 1:1 mercury: amine complexation stoichiometry.
