Gas-phase transport of hydrogen atoms in methanol synthesis over copper/zinc oxide catalysts?

Abstract

There is much evidence for hydrogen spillover between the copper and zinc oxide components of Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalysts for methanol synthesis. Hitherto it has been assumed that this spillover flows across the catalyst surfaces, but recently the existence of hydrogen spillover by the gas-phase transport of hydrogen atoms has been claimed to occur below 400 K. An analysis of the methanol synthesis system shows that, even with the most favourable assumptions, gas-phase transport of hydrogen atoms is always insignificant.
