Phase separation in model colloidal dispersions

Abstract

Dispersions in n-alkanes of silica particles coated with grafted-C18 chains (silica-g-stearyl) exhibit both upper (UFT) and lower (LFT) flocculation temperatures. The dependence of the UFT and LFT on particle volume fraction (ϕ), particle diameter (d) and the nature of the alkane (pentane to heptane) has been studied. The equilibrium phase diagram (T against ϕ) has been constructed for one system. Comparison with the UFT against ϕ curve suggests that the latter is the spinodal curve. A preliminary theory is given for the low-concentration behaviour of these systems.
