Abstract
An embryogenic callus was isolated from suspensor cells of 5–year–old sugar pine seeds. With a newly formulated basal medium and by removal of 2,4–D followed by an addition of BAP, globular somatic embryos were induced having elongated suspensors. In darkness, embryos elongated and formed numerous cotyledons in a repetitive and true–to–type polyembryonic process. When separated from one another, none of the embryos showed overt evidence of lethal or competitive effects under in vitro conditions.
