Stimulation by Cyclic AMP and ppGpp of Chloramphenicol Acetyl Transferase Synthesis

Abstract

CYCLIC AMP controls a number of functions in Escherichia coli1. Its role in regulating the synthesis of the inducible enzymes involved in sugar utilization has been well documented for both in vivo and in vitro conditions. Recently, Harwood and Smith2 reported that cyclic AMP regulates the levels of the antibiotic inactivating enzymes, chloramphenicol acetyl transferase (CAT)3 and streptomycin adenylyl transferase (SAT), produced by E. coli harbouring a drug resistance factor. Since CAT and SAT are synthesized constitutively, it was of interest to ask whether their regulation by cyclic AMP is similar to that of the inducible enzymes.
