Measurement of forces between lecithin bilayers

Abstract

CELL fusion1 and vesicle-membrane2 or vesicle-synapse3 fusion are currently thought to involve distance-dependent interactions between membranes. We have devised a general method for measuring such forces between planar phospho-lipid membranes, and report here results for the specific case of egg lecithin (phosphatidyl choline) bilayers in water.
