Abstract
THE examination of interactions between copper ions and adenine is germane to the understanding of the role of trace elements in biochemical processes involving nucleic acids1. Optical and electron paramagnetic resonance investigations of two copper(II) adenine complexes, Cu2(C5H5N5)4(ClO4)4.nH2O and Cu2(C5H4N5)4.4H2O, have been undertaken in order to assess the nature of such interactions. There is definite evidence for antiferro-magnetic coupling between pairs of metal ions in the complexes of neutral and anionic adenine, designated as I and II respectively. The magnetic parameters, g∥ and A∥, which have been determined for II in this study, will supplement the results reported by Goodgame and Price2.
