Haemolytic Activity of Suspensions of Different Silica Modifications and Inert Dusts

Abstract

RECENTLY, Harley and Margolis1 reported haemolytic activity of amorphous silica particles of sizes larger than 5 mµ. In the course of an investigation on the possible role of complement (C′) in the cytotoxicity of quartz, our experiments revealed a specific haemolytic effect of buffered saline suspensions of this mineral. Using corundum (α-Al2O3) and anatase (TiO2) of the same surface area as quartz, significantly less haemolysis was found2.
