Abstract
THE decomposition of retained austenite as the second stage in the tempering of quenched steels is well recognized, and has been explored extensively. However, the role of retained austenite in the first stage tempering reaction has not been studied widely. That this may not be a passive role is suggested by the infrequent reports that a change in austenite chemistry by carbon enrichment accompanies this stage of tempering1–3.
