    He interpreted his area 4 as being the structural equivalent of the primary motor cortex, which controls voluntary movements (Fritsch and Hitzig, 1870). Studies in nonhuman primates (Vogt and Vogt, 1919) and comparisons with electric stimulations in neurosurgical patients (Foerster, 1931) and myeloarchitectonic maps (Vogt and Vogt, 1919) proved further structural–functional correlations. More recently, matches between abrupt changes in response properties of neurons and the position of cytoarchitectonic borders have been demonstrated (Tanji and Kurata, 1989; Luppino et al., 1991; Matelli et al., 1991).
