Nanostructured silica-based drug delivery vehicles for hydrophobic and moisture sensitive drugs

Current technology for controlled drug delivery is mainly based on the use of micron or submicron matrices of polymers, in which the drug is either encapsulated or dispersed, either adsorbed or chemically bonded on the internal surface [4]. Nanoporous inorganic materials, such as silica (SiO2) with several levels of sophistication in their architecture and/or composition have also been proposed as drug delivery devices [5–8].
