    Some of those carriers have already made their way into the clinical arena (i.e., polymeric particles), while others are still under preclinical development (i.e., liposomes) or at initial clinical research stages (dendrimers and quantum dots). Current technology for controlled drug delivery is mainly based on the use of micron or submicron matrices of polymers, in which the drug is either encapsulated or dispersed, either adsorbed or chemically bonded on the internal surface [4].
