Abstract

In this chapter, we describe recent progresses on graphene quantum dots (GQDs) for light-emitting devices (LEDs). We start with a general definition of GQDs and provide the mechanism of intrinsic photoluminescence (PL) of GQDs, which is originated from confined sp2 carbon clusters, namely subdomain. Next, we introduce the various synthetic strategies of GQDs mainly by top-down and bottom-up approaches with the importance of oxidation control. The ways to realize highly efficient PL from GQDs are also discussed. With some important features of state-of-the-art GQD-based LED applications, a brief perspective is presented, aiming for the next-generation flexible displays.
