In premenopausal women, it was reported that the ERα gene XbaI polymorphism was associated with BMD [14]. However, a more recent study showed that this relationship only occurred in association with the ERα gene PvuII polymorphism and not with the ERα gene XbaI polymorphism, whereby women with dominant (PP) genotypes have higher average lumbar spine BMD values than those with recessive (pp) genotypes [16].

2009, Fertility and SterilityCitation Excerpt :The present study also confirmed a close correlation between polymorphisms of ERα-XbaI and endometriosis and the X allele as a risk factor of endometriosis. Similar findings were described by Mizunuma et al. (28), who demonstrated that premenopausal women with the Xx genotype had significantly higher bone mineral density than those with other genotypes, suggesting that the Xx genotype of the ERα gene was more dependent on estrogen levels. Endometriosis is known to be an estrogen-dependent disorder, physiologically or pharmacologically induced by a decrease of serum estrogen levels, which is associated with regression of several diseases (29) such as breast cancer, endometrial cancer, obesity, multiple sclerosis, adenomyosis (30), leiomyomas, and endometrial cancer (31).
