Testing the role of testosterone versus estrogens in mediating reproductive transitions in female rhesus macaques
2022, Hormones and BehaviorCitation Excerpt :Although androgens are typically known as ‘male’ hormones, they are indispensable for normal development and reproduction in female vertebrates (Staub and De Beer, 1997; Walters, 2015). Via androgen receptor signaling, T plays a key role in the normal reproduction of female primates including women, in addition to actions via conversion to estrogens (Arlt, 2006; Burger, 2002; Davison and Davis, 2003). When androgen production is suppressed by bilateral ovariectomy and adrenalectomy, female rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) become sexually unreceptive despite being given estrogen; T then restores receptivity when given subcutaneously (Everitt et al., 1972) or implanted into the central nervous system (Everitt and Herbert, 1975).
Testosterone synthesis in the female songbird brain
2020, Hormones and BehaviorCitation Excerpt :Neuromodulators, including neuroestrogens, are synthesized within the brain to rapidly control local neural circuits and behavior (Remage-Healey, 2014; Saldanha et al., 2011). Testosterone has been suggested to control important functions such as female sexual desire in humans (Alexander et al., 2006; Davison and Davis, 2003, 2011; Pluchino et al., 2013) and women often report an increased sexual desire when they are treated with testosterone (Arlt et al., 1999; Tuiten et al., 2000; Van Goozen et al., 1997) despite concurrent aromatase inhibition (Dahir and Travers-Gustafson, 2014). Cognitive performance has also been linked to androgens in women (Davison and Davis, 2003; Pluchino et al., 2015), and testosterone can affect attention, emotion processing and memory within a few hours of treatment (Aleman et al., 2004; Bos et al., 2016; Postma et al., 2000), consistent with a direct neural site-of-action.
