Many older adults have oral health problems that can impact significantly upon their general health status and, therefore, require therapeutic interventions. The physician should be familiar with the basics of general dentistry, understand the harmful side effects of prescribed drugs and dental medications, and be aware of important dental patient management issues related to diabetes, anticoagulant and corticosteroid use, infective endocarditis, and prosthetic joints. The physician also should include an oral evaluation as part of the general assessment and encourage patients to seek appropriate dental care.
