2017, Journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology B: BiologyCitation Excerpt :Inadequate protection from UVR is a significant public health issue, resulting in increased skin cancer rates and poor skin health in an ageing global population; hence the requirement to protect skin from both daily and acute/intense UVR exposure is critical to long term human health [4]. Topical sunscreens act as a protective physical barrier, containing filters that block UVR penetration through the skin thereby preventing the initiation of photocarcinogenesis and photoageing [5–7]. There are two major types of sunscreen; UVB only and flat-spectrum sunscreens, both contain filters that block out solar UVB, but the flat-spectrum contains additional filters that block the UVA wavelengths from 280 nm to 380 nm.
