      Inadequate protection from UVR is a significant public health issue, resulting in increased skin cancer rates and poor skin health in an ageing global population; hence the requirement to protect skin from both daily and acute/intense UVR exposure is critical to long term human health [4]. Topical sunscreens act as a protective physical barrier, containing filters that block UVR penetration through the skin thereby preventing the initiation of photocarcinogenesis and photoageing [5–7]. There are two major types of sunscreen; UVB only and flat-spectrum sunscreens, both contain filters that block out solar UVB, but the flat-spectrum contains additional filters that block the UVA wavelengths from 280 nm to 380 nm.

      Dietary fish oils rich in ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids are promising systemic photoprotective agents.147-149 A number of mechanisms have been proposed for the photoprotection of ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, including (1) competition with ω-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids for metabolism by cyclooxygenase, resulting in production of less active prostaglandins147; (2) modulation of proinflammatory cytokines production132,149; and (3) buffering of free radicals and reactive oxygen species, thus protecting important structures from damage.148 There is one case report of an EPP patient who improved with a dietary supplement of fish oils.150
