Abstract

The dielectric constant ɛ′(ω) and measured a.c. conductivity σm(ω) of lightly doped poly (N-methylpyrrole) films have been investigated in the temperature range 77–350 K and in the frequency range 100 Hz–1 MHz. In the low-temperature region the measured a.c. conductivity can be described by the relation σ(ω) = Aωs, where the exponent s is found to be less than unity. At high temperatures the conductivity remains strongly frequency dependent but the dependence becomes weak at low frequencies. The temperature and frequency dependences of a.c. conductivity σ(ω) can be qualitatively explained by the contributions from two mechanisms, one giving rise to a broad dielectric loss peak having a distribution of relaxation times, and the other giving a linear dependence of conductivity on frequency.

The frequency dependent dielectric measurements are considered as an additional important tool for the understanding of charge transport mechanism [1–9]. In the low frequency region, the dielectric measurements provide an information about the motion of charge carriers [1,10]. The ac conduction mechanisms of disordered materials are thoroughly discussed in the literature [10,11–14].

In spite of the sustained efforts to explain the mechanism of charge transport of various π-conjugated polymers (CPs) no convincing mechanism has been proposed so far, because of their great variety in transport properties [36–39]. Also their behavior can be considered as dielectric [36,40–43] and their conductivity decreases with decreasing temperature in the same experimental manner [42–45]. In this study, and in order to ensure the formation of intercalated PPy-montmorillonite nanocomposites, the spontaneous in situ polymerization of pyrrole into Fe(III)-exchanged montmorillonite (MMT) has been adopted.
