The destruction of chlorophyll does not lead to the release of nutrients that are absorbed by the leaf; instead, chlorophyll is catabolized, and decomposition products accumulate in vacuoles for further detoxification (Peisker et al., 1990; Hinder et al., 1996; Thomas, 1997). Such treatment is necessary to protect cells from toxic chlorophyll, which produces highly reactive singlet oxygen (Marder et al., 1998; Matile et al., 1999).
