Abstract

The activity of representative supported copper systems, Cu/MgO, Cu/Al2O3, Cu/ZrO2 and coprecipitated CuO/ZnO/Al2O3, towards carbon dioxide containing feedstocks has been investigated. The results confirm that the support plays an important role in favouring the transformation of carbon monoxide/hydrogen and carbon dioxide containing feedstocks, respectively. With Cu/Al2O3 and Cu/ZrO2 and carbon dioxide/hydrogen, a study of the variation of the methanol-to-carbon monoxide ratio as a function of the inverse of the flow-rate confirms that methanol is the primary product from carbon dioxide for these catalysts at atmospheric pressure.
