Abstract

The NMR spectra of mono-and disubsituted trans-stilbenes have been recorded in CDCl3 and the influence of ring substituents discussed. Electron donating substituents enhance the magnetic shielding of the olefinic protons, while electron withdrawing substituents reduce the magnetic shielding. The chemical shifts of the olefinic protons show a rough correlation with the σ-values of Hammett. A better correlation is obtained by applying the Taft combination 0·40 σI + 0·70 σR, which can also be employed for m-substituted stilbenes. The change in electron density with ring substitution in the stilbene molecule is transmitted to the olefinic double bond by resonance interaction.
